Bellingham Halloween Thriller Dance
November 1st, 2008

Last night something special happened in Bellingham. 50 people dressed as zombies met at the corner of Holly and Railroad to reinact the Thriller dance. My friends and I went down to watch and this was what we saw. I didn’t get to see any of the actual dance because there was a wall of bodies in the way. But, just seeing this many people gathered together, blocking traffic, was worth it. As you can see in the lower image, the blocked traffic became involuntary pedistals for all of the watching people.
There is a very poor video of the event on youtube . I saw other video cameras there so hopefully someone with a steadier hand will post soon.

K9000 - More Interest in Quality
November 1st, 2008

November brings with it my 5th song. I wanted to return to the style of the first song that I released while introducing a lot of what I’ve been learning. The title “More Interest in Quality” refers to the renewed interest in analog technologies within many art and musical communities. Quality refers to a property of art or music, not the degree of excellence or craftsmanship. i.e. analog synths have a very different quality than digital synths. Enjoy!

The Audacity of Hope
November 5th, 2008

Two years ago, I read a book that changed my view of what great leadership can be. It’s been a long journey since I read that book, struggling to convince everyone and myself that this was the man that would be our next president. My hope of him winning blinded the cynical and more realistic side of my brain. That’s the audacity of hope.

Update: I just had to add this one.

EventBox
November 9th, 2008

EventBox looks like a promising way to organize all of your social networking into one space. So far, it interfaces with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Digg, Pownce, and Reddit. In addition, you get a simple, functional RSS reader. I won’t be spending $20 until they really offer an all-in-one solution, which for me means adding myspace and it would be nice to see virb support as well.
Exclusively on OS X.

Minority Report comes to life
November 15th, 2008
I want one. The most incredible part of this to me is that it only took 6 years to go from a sci-fi movie concept to an actual product. Development of “impossible” gadgets is becoming so fast, at some point the word impossible will just drop it’s prefix. Where will we be in 20 years? In 1988 I was two, the internet didn’t exist, TVs still had picture tubes, and a video watch was the “impossible” device. It turns out that a video watch isn’t very useful, but we’ve done even better: the iPhone or Android not only provide video (and the time), but music, internet, and a platform with limitless possibilities.
It’s hard to imagine the “impossible” gadgets from 2028. My best guess is that most of them will be robotics. Right now, our idea of an impossible robot is WALL-E. We may not be able to cram all of his features into a robot (it’s a cartoon after all), but I think we will have artificial intelligence that is convincing enough that we will have robotic friends, or pets. We will love them, and they will love us.
What impossible gadgets would you like to see in 2028?

Pierre-Abraham Rochat
November 19th, 2008

Beautiful and simple illustrations from Pierre-Abraham Rochat’s portfolio. It’s really nice to see someone working in a lot of mediums have a consistent style that spans his work. I’m particularly fond of the 3D scenes, some of which appear to be at least partially vector (maybe entirely). This kind of clean, flat illustration would lend itself well to web design, but it appears that Pierre mostly does print work. Great inspiration.

Christmas Wish List
November 22nd, 2008

With Black Friday approaching, I’ve decided to publish my wish list to make life a little easier for my relatives and friends.
1. Outliers
The new book from Malcolm Gladwell. Seems to be on every nerd’s wishlist. I’m really looking forward to reading this. Available from Amazon.com for $17.
2. New Scientist Magazine Subscription
I’ve been reading the limited content from New Scientist Online for a while now. This is a great way to keep up on the newest in science, tech, and space. Newscientist.com $69 for a year and full access to web content.
3. Dell 2408WFP 24in Monitor
I need more desktop space for design work. Bonus: this monitor will double as a HDTV. Available from Dell.com for $517 (on sale).
4. Aluminum Macbook or Macbook Pro
My Macbook is an original CoreDuo (not the newer Core2Duo) and I’ve had it for over two years. It’s been the best computer I’ve ever owned, but it’s time for an upgrade. Available from Apple.com for $1299 for the Macbook and $1999 for the Macbook Pro.

I’m really loving the texture in Patrick’s work. It reminds me of the illustrations that accompanied stories in old Reader’s Digest compilations. Much more at Patrick’s portfolio and blog

The Future of Projection
November 29th, 2008
Projection technology has been making giant leaps recently. Here are few of the most impressive features I’ve seen.
Video mapping onto 3D objects
Pico laser projector
3D holographic projector
Now put it all together: A handheld projector that scans the 3d structure it’s being projected onto and adjusts the content appropriately. The content being projected can interact with the surface it’s being projected onto and jump out into the space between the surface and the projector in a holographic projection. The content can then be context sensitive. For instance, if you project onto the floor you could display a map of the area and if you project onto the ceiling you could display a map of constellations. There will be a lot to play with when these hit the market.
