Django 1.0
September 14th, 2008

Django, my web framework of choice, finally reached 1.0 status earlier this month (although it’s been running enterprise websites for several years). Mostly it means forward-compatibility with subsequent 1.x releases. So, today I buckled down and installed 1.0 on my Dreamhost server. It went pretty smoothly except for a few issues with the new comments system, but it only took about 2 hours to rewrite the apps for my two sites (one being my father’s watercolor gallery) and get them running with the help of the 1.0 Porting Guide provided on the official Django website.
Check out the new comment system. Now your name can have a URL attached that links to your personal website or blog and leave an email address (I won’t give it to anyone, I promise) so that I can respond to comments that warrant a response.
Next up is porting over jennipotts.com so that subsequent Clickpop sites are all running the same version.

Polish Posters of American Films
September 14th, 2008

Steph found these great Polish posters of American films the other day. All the American promotional posters were essentially thrown away in Poland while under Communist rule. Now they’re collectors items and are worth a ton. I’m definitely going to be looking to these for inspiration in future design work.

Syd Mead Concept Art
September 15th, 2008

Concept art by Syd Mead. Found this after watching Blade Runner last night. He did visual design for Blade Runner, Tron, Aliens, and whole lot of other great films.

RSS Update
September 16th, 2008

There’s been an RSS feed on this site for a while now, but I never really got it running properly. Now the Latest Entries feed has the full body text of the blog entry included for those of you that read everything right from your RSS reader. I’ve also added a Comments feed that’s simply a list of the 10 most recent comments on the blog. The links to these feeds can be found at the bottom of the sidebar to the right. Let me know if there are any problems.

Tax Plans
September 19th, 2008
Really nice infograph from Chartjunk about our presidential candidates’ tax plans. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m almost making over $600k a year (just shy), but until I am, I think I’ll go with Obama and his plan.
A .pdf version of the the chart is available on said site along with a comparison to the chart from The Washington Post (which this was based on). It’s interesting how the same data can be portrayed in dramatically different ways. This way is much clearer and easier to understand.

Otl Aicher 1972 Olympics
September 30th, 2008

Beautiful posters from Otl Aicher for the 1972 Munich Olympics. See the full catalog of design work.
Strange that the background these were shot on is very similar to the background on this blog!
