Big Dog Robot

I had no idea that robotics was getting to this level. It’s amazing how animal-like this robot is. When it’s slipping on the ice you almost feel sorry for it.

I’ve watched this video a number of times, but could never put my finger on what exactly irked me when the robot slips on the ice. I think you nailed it: I almost feel sorry for it when it slips. My reaction is, of course, awe, but also a bit of… disgust? I think it’s the uncanny valley coming into play. The way it tries to stay on its feet is exactly like that of a real, living animal. However, its physical appearance betrays any conceptions of it being alive. The result, it seems, is not a good one. Still, this robot blows my mind.

By the way, I LOVE your site. The design, the content, everything. I just stayed up way too late reading a bunch of your posts and exploring some of your links. Watched the first part of “Growing Up in the Universe” and plan on finishing it when I have time.

Also, based on some of the art you’ve shared, I think you’d really like the work of Syd Mead. His stuff is brilliant. The man’s creativity and imagination never cease to amaze me. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=syd+mead
