K9000 - Act Up + Dynamo
March 1st, 2009

I know it’s been a while since I last released a song, so to make up for it I’m releasing two songs in an EP Act up + Dynamo complete with high-res album art. I’m pledging to get back to at least one song a month, so expect another one at the end of March. Enjoy!

The Future According to Microsoft

The future is going to a lot of fun.
By the way, this is the first step in the augmentation of reality that I was talking about in my essay The Authors of Reality

Geometries
March 3rd, 2009

I haven’t been doing enough design for the fun of it, so I’ve decided to do a poster series that I’m calling Geometries (even though it probably won’t be all geometic shapes). I’m just experimenting with some ideas that I’ve been kicking around.

World Builder
March 5th, 2009
This is the future, and it might not be that far off. We won’t have the brain interface, but we will have the processing power (a current super computer is probably already enough) and the emersive technology to make this happen in the next 5 years. The brain interface is probably 20 years or more off. That’s not too long, but I want one now.

Augmented Reality: the 6th Sense
March 10th, 2009
The amazing thing about this device is that it can be built with $350 of off the shelf components, a cell phone, and software. If this went into mass production even now, we could expect a smaller form factor, better components, and a lower price. If they can boost the processing power and switch to a laser projector, the whole setup would work better and be more flexible. It needs more processing power to eliminate the loading times, and a laser projector to keep the projected image always in focus (since lasers don’t get projected through a lense they are always in focus).
I would be ready to buy one right now if they weren’t so dorky. Maybe a shoulder mounted projector, or better yet, a display on my glasses that only I can see.
I really like the idea of using your hands as the interface (the part where he dials a number with his hand). The implementation in World Builder seems about right. We’re going to need a holographic projector for that.

Dynamo Video
March 12th, 2009
My good friend David Drori was nice enough to work up a music video for the song Dynamo that I released earlier this month. My hat is off to you Dave, the imagery in this video captures almost exactly the grit, noise, and nostalgia that I try to get into my music.
To many future collaborations. Cheers!
Update: David just posted about the video on his blog

Look Around You
March 14th, 2009
Look Around You is a short British comedy show that parodies 1970s science education videos. There are at least a dozen available in full on youtube right now. Dave, do you think we could do something like this for the next K9000 video?

The Ghost and The Grace V2
March 16th, 2009

Version two of theghostandthegrace.com just went live. The Ghost and the Grace is the side project from Idiot Pilot member Daniel Anderson who is a good friend of mine. Daniel’s first album under the “Ghost” pseudonym titled Behold! A Pale Horse will drop in May. Until then, enjoy the site, get some rad merch, and keep an eye out for some special promotional stuff very soon.
Oh, and while I was working on the site I got a sneak preview of the album. It’s beautiful country/folk/americana with a distinct northwest feel and I think everyone will enjoy it.

Then there’s this incredible article about carbon nanotube muscles that are being developed. The nanotube muscles are as strong as diamonds, as flexible as rubber, as light as air, 30 times stronger than natural muscle by volume, can contract 4000 times faster than natural muscle, and can operate at temperatures ranging from -320°F to 2800°F. Now make me a suit out of this stuff. Via Wired

The Ghost and The Grace Logos
March 20th, 2009

For the recent revision of theghostandthegrace.com I wanted to rethink the logo bit. The original was out of balance and didn’t feel “American” to me. The flourish on the G was trimmed back for balance and shields were added behind the small text to bring more attention to them and create a better sense of flow from top to bottom. “Grace” was originally set in Gotham, but it was too geometric to be a counterpart to the “Ghost” script so I decided on Univers. I usually wouldn’t use three typefaces in a logo, but the eclectic style of the music called for the variety you might find in a letterpress ad.

Because of the length of the text in the logo, a simplified design was needed for quick recognition of the brand. Once again, I chose the combination of a shield with Gotham.

The Ghost and The Grace Vlogs
March 26th, 2009

Dan’s been doing a great series of video blogs over at theghostandthegrace.com . In each video he talks about a different song from the upcoming album, plays clips, and talks about the meaning of the lyrics and the influences that inspired him. If you’re interested in the band, or how a professional musician works, this is well worth watching.

Teenage Engineering OP-1
March 31st, 2009

Besides having an awesome name and a beautiful website — that makes the 90s look cool — Teenage Engineering is putting together the perfect synthesizer for me. The OP-1 can be used as a controller, or a portable synth complete with an internal rechargable battery. The beta run of these will be limited to 100 units, and it has an OLED display, so you can expect it to be pretty spendy.
