Sidearm Connect
May 3rd, 2009
About a month ago I started really digging into social media to promote Sidearm and reconnect and stay connected with my contacts and friends. So I’ve started to revamp the Sidearm Facebook and MySpace pages, I’m posting links and tidbits on Twitter, and I’ve added a newsletter to Sidearm. The first newsletter will be coming out this week, so if you haven’t signed up make sure you do. The newsletter signup and all the other social networking info about Sidearm can be found in the “Connect” sidebar area.
You’re probably sick of hearing about it from everywhere else, but I would like to suggest that you give Twitter a try if you haven’t. If the prospect of 140 character messages seems annoying or boring, consider that you can get jokes from Michael Ian Black , Michael Showalter , and John Hodgman – for free! The jokes alone are worth using it. Oh, and be sure you follow Sidearm .
Update: the newsletter is going to have to wait because I have too much to do before I take off for Spokane early Thursday morning.

Henry Klein Architect
May 7th, 2009

The Henry Klein book that I’ve been working on for the last six months is finally finished and printed. I’ve learned so much from this process and I am still planning on sharing the details in a case study later this month.
Getting things done feels great!

Scrapbook #6 Edward Burtynsky
May 18th, 2009

This amazing photography is by Edward Burtynsky. I’m not sure if these have been adjusted or if the subject matter really looks that way, but it looks like concept art or colorized photography. Either way I love these geometric landscapes. Much more at www.edwardburtynsky.com

Encyclopedia Galactica P58-983-284-927-163
May 19th, 2009

My new project is borrowing from Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan’s idea of an Encyclopedia Galactica , a catalog of planets from some future or present galactic civilization. I plan on making this an ongoing project and I will be selecting several designs to be printed up, so let me know which ones you like best. P58-983-284-927-163 is a sparse planet that is in the final stages of terraforming, the engineering of the planets surface and atmosphere.
Update: I realized that the text is way too small to read, so here’s a close-up.

Want a Following?
May 20th, 2009

This is one of the things I’ve been thinking about recently for inspiration and motivation. If you want people to follow you and your work you need to become a specialist in some field. Once you’ve established yourself, being a leader is a natural step.
I keep this in mind not because I expect to become the leader of my field, but rather to focus on the short term goals that will lead me in that direction. For me I see the need to specialize to establish a unique image for Sidearm. To find a set of themes and styles that makes this place unmistakably different. Leadership is not the goal, it is the result of the insight gathered through countless hours of hard work in persuit of specialization.

I got bored and decided to a do a poster for one of my favorite books. The title is hand lettered and I actually developed a whole font (just the uppercase) for it. Bigger version on flickr

Scrapbook #7 John Berkey
May 22nd, 2009

John Berkey was an artist that specialized in sci-fi concept art. He worked on early Star Wars artwork, and did dozens of book covers for authors such as Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. Any time an artist can have a sloppy painting style and still create imagery that is so solid it makes me rethink my own methods. I hold on too tightly to perfect lines and smooth gradients – I need to embrace chaos!
There’s a large gallery of his work at Net-Cafe

K9000 - M13
May 26th, 2009

New single M13 is here and a new Encyclopedia Galactica entry. I’m thinking I’ll probably do songs for a few of the posters. That gets me thinking about a show too, where the posters are on display with the songs playing in the background.
The album art is only available in the zip file, but it’s basically a cropped version of the poster so I left it out of this post.
