Richard Lee Francis: A Journey of Collaboration and Legacy
My journey with Richard Lee Francis, a retired professor from Western Washington University and an architectural critic, began with a project that merged our mutual appreciation for architecture. Despite my initial limited knowledge in the field, Richard's brilliant yet eccentric nature, marked by his mid-Atlantic accent and Ivy League background, sparked a deep, collaborative bond.

Henry Klein Architect
Our first endeavor was a book about Pacific Northwest architect Henry Klein. Richard, having never used a computer, had compiled a rich collection of texts, film negatives, and prints. My role was to transform these into a digital design suitable for printing. Over a year of weekly meetings, we navigated the complexities of digital design, leading to the successful publication and promotion of "Henry Klein Architect."

From Colleagues to Friends
Our relationship transcended professional boundaries, evolving into weekly coffee meetings where we discussed everything from architecture and art, history and politics, to the latest in technology (that Richard, a self proclaimed Ludite, would read about but never interact with). These conversations were not just exchanges of knowledge but a deepening of our friendship.

The Place of Architecture
The success of our initial project paved the way for "The Place of Architecture," a more ambitious compilation of Richard’s writings. This multi-year project included research trips, like a visit to Los Angeles’ major museums, and now integrated my photography, as our projects became more collaborative.

Poetry and Personal Reflections
Our collaboration further extended to "Places of My Mind," a collection of Richard's travel poetry, and "The Architectonics of Nature," a reflection on his home and garden's evolution. These projects were followed by smaller pamphlets about his home and sculpture collection, illustrating the breadth of his interests.

Beyond Books
As years passed, Richard became like an adoptive grandfather to me. Our interactions grew to include personal assistance and caregiving, as I helped manage his appointments, shopping, and eventually his personal care. My role evolved to being a trustee of the Richard Lee Francis Trust, holding Power of Attorney, and executing his will.
A Legacy Entrusted
Managing Richard's estate and fulfilling his final wishes upon his passing was a profound honor. His trust in me to oversee these responsibilities was a testament to the depth of our relationship. Richard left an indelible mark on my life, both professionally and personally, and his legacy continues to inspire me.
